Project
A new airport in Sanya, Hainan, China is being constructed on an artificial island, created by reclaiming land from Hongtang Bay. The USD 5 billion project covers 28 square kilometers and includes an airport operation zone, international trade zone, and support services zone. Developed by an HNA Group Co., Ltd. subsidiary, multiple construction contracts were awarded, with China Construction Sixth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd. securing several contracts. This organization was retained to develop a large-scale dynamic information model of this extensive infrastructure project to guide construction and improve engineering quality.

Solution
China Construction Sixth Engineering Division Corp., Ltd. applied Bentley’s BIM methodology to visualize, simulate, coordinate, and integrate 3D data. The team ultimately wanted to deliver a real-time, high-resolution reality mesh of the entire project. With point cloud data acquired using unmanned aerial vehicles, the project team captured real-time data to assess the construction environment (including detailed terrain information) and closely monitor and control the construction process. The team also used Bentley applications to analyze the movement of an underwater steel cylinder to evaluate vibrations and the impact of waves and tides. Team members used this data to reduce risk and improve worker safety.

Outcome
The project team successfully modeled the terrain, water, and vibration conditions, and construction site progress in real time using Bentley applications. This 3D model expedited the site allocation process on the artificial island and improved collaboration among all parties. Centralized data storage and access streamlined collaboration and reduced project time and delivery cost. By simulating construction plans and progress, all stakeholders could communicate more effectively, which improved work efficiency and construction quality.

Software
The team used ContextCapture to create a real-time, high-resolution reality mesh to monitor construction progress. MicroStation, PowerCivil, and OpenBridge Modeler were also used to help create the detailed reality mesh. ProjectWise enabled collaborative management of 3D information models. Lastly, the team used SACS and MOSES to address the unique maritime conditions associated with the island project’s structures.
